Defence

1. IAF to participate in a multinational exercise in Australia  
 

  • According to the IAF (Indian Air Force), An Indian Air Force contingent landed at the Darwin Air Force Base in Australia to participate in a multinational air exercise ‘Ex Pitch Black’.
  • The IAF contingent comprised of Su-30 MKI fighter jets (4), C-130 (1) and C-17 transporter aircraft (1).
  • The objective of the exercise is to practice Offensive Counter Air (OCA) and Defensive Counter Air (DCA) combat, in a simulated war environment.
  • It involves over 100 aircraft from around the globe and will provide a unique opportunity to the air-warriors to operate in a dynamic warlike environment.
Note:
  • Exercise Pitch Black is a biennial warfare exercise hosted by the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) normally held in Northern Australia.
  • The first Pitch Black exercises took place on 15-16 June 1981 between different RAAF units.

International Affairs

2. India & Uganda sign four MoUs in various fields

  • Indian Prime Minister Mr Narendra Modi reached Kampala (Ugandan capital) on the second leg of his three-African nations tour.
  • The two leaders Narendra Modi (Indian Prime Minister) and Yoweri Museveni (Ugandan President) comprehensively reviewed all aspects of bilateral relations.
  • India and Uganda have signed four MoUs in the areas of defence cooperation, visa exemption for official and diplomatic passport holders, cultural exchange programme and material testing laboratory.
  • India also announced two Lines of Credit worth nearly 200 million US dollars to Uganda in energy, infrastructure, agriculture and dairy sectors.

3. Myanmar to host Asean education meet in Oct

  • Myanmar will host the next Asean Education Ministers Meeting (ASED) in October to boost its education sector.
  • The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) partner countries include India, China, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, Russia, the US and Australia.
  • The first ASED was held in Singapore (in 2006) and last in Malaysia.

4. PM Modi gifts cows to villagers at Rweru Model Village

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Rweru Model Village in Rwanda and gifted 200 cows to villagers, under the Rwandan Government's Girinka Programme.
  • Under this scheme, poor families are gifted dairy cows and the first female calf born of the cow is gifted to the neighbour.
  • The word Girinka can be translated as ‘may you have a cow’ and describes a centuries-old cultural practice in Rwanda.

5. Amendments to prohibition law passed in Bihar Assembly

  • The Bihar Assembly has passed a bill to amend some of the stringent provisions of the prohibition law in order to prevent its misuse and make the quantum of punishment proportionate to the nature of the offence.
  • Changes in the excise law enacted in 2016 are being brought after the state received complaints of widespread misuse of the provisions by police and excise officials.
  • Now, first-time offenders will have to pay a fine of 50,000 rupees, failing which, they will have to undergo a prison term of three months.
  • Those violating the law for the second time and more will be liable to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of five lakh rupees.

6. Assam government to set up the separate directorate for Divyangs

  • The Assam government has decided to set up a separate directorate for the ‘Divyangs’.
  • According to the Social Welfare minister Pramila Rani Brahma, the Social Welfare department to give 1 thousand rupees per month to all Divyangs as stipend.
  • Divyang is a Hindi word meaning the one with a divine body.

7. WCD Ministry launches ‘#Childline1098’ Contest

  • The Ministry of Women and Child Development (WCD) has launched a contest ‘#Childline1098’ inviting people to share images of the Childline.
  • The contest invites people to share images of the Childline 1098 logo that they spot at unique locations and send it with a tagline.
  • The contest has been organised to mark 'World Day against Trafficking in Persons' on 30th July.
  • The NCERT has published the information regarding Childline (1098) on the back side of the front cover of all course books from Class 6 to Class 12.

8. Ramachandra Guha pens 'the most ambitious book' on Gandhi

  • Renowned historian and author ‘Ramachandra Guha’ has penned a new book on Mahatma Gandhi "Gandhi: the years that changed the world (1914-1948)".
  • It will be published by Penguin Random House India.
  • The book will not only tell the story of Gandhi's life, from his departure from South Africa to his dramatic assassination in 1948, but also the history of our freedom movement and its many strands.

9. Mobile app for replacement of transformers in Rajasthan

  • The Rajasthan Govt. has decided to introduce a mobile app 'Bijli Mitra' for farmers to register their complaint regarding defunct transformers.
  • The transformer would be replaced within six hours of the complaint.
  • Earlier, the scheme was being launched on a pilot basis from Jhalawara.

10. Bihar starts an online transfer of diesel subsidy to farmers

  • The Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar has launched the online transfer of diesel subsidy directly into the bank accounts of farmers in the state.
  • Now, Registered farmers would directly get the payment of diesel subsidy into their bank accounts within 25 days.
  • Earlier, it used to take three months for farmers to get the money of diesel subsidy.

11. Lewis Hamilton wins German Grand Prix 2018

  • British racing driver Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) has won the German Grand Prix 2018 held at Hockenheimring track in Germany.
  • Hamilton’s recovery drive from P14 to the top step of the podium is already being hailed as one of his best wins in Formula 1.
  • Hamilton was followed by Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes) in the second position and Kimi Raikkonen (Ferrari)secured the third position.
Note:
  • The 2018 German Grand Prix was a Formula One motor race held in Germany.
